Local SEO for Small Businesses: How to Get Found by Customers Near You

Regular SEO is about ranking for broad keywords like "best running shoes." Local SEO is about ranking for "shoe store near me" — searches where the person is looking for a business in their area. For local businesses, this is the only SEO that matters.

    Why Local SEO Is Different

Google uses a different algorithm for local searches. When someone searches "plumber near me," Google shows the map pack — three local businesses with pins on a map. To get into that map pack, you need to optimize for local ranking factors, not just general SEO.

Step 1: Optimize Your Google Business Profile

This is step one for a reason. Your Google Business Profile is what Google uses to determine if you show up in local search. Claim it, verify it, and fill out every section — categories, description, services, hours, photos. An incomplete profile tells Google you're not serious.

    Step 2: Build Consistent Citations

A citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on another website. Yelp, Yellow Pages, Apple Maps, Bing Places — these all count. The key is consistency. If your Google profile says "Smith Plumbing LLC" and Yelp says "Smith Plumbing," Google gets confused. Make sure your NAP is identical everywhere.

Step 3: Get Reviews — Lots of Them

Reviews are the most impactful local SEO action you can take. They improve your map pack ranking, make your listing more clickable, and build trust with potential customers. Automate review requests so every customer gets asked — consistency matters more than volume.

    Step 4: Create Location-Specific Content

If you serve multiple cities, create a page for each one. "Landscaping Services in [City]" gives Google a page to rank for that specific search. Without location pages, you're invisible in cities where you don't have a physical address.

Step 5: Make Your Website Fast and Mobile-Friendly

Google evaluates the website linked from your Google Business Profile. If it's slow or not mobile-friendly, your local ranking suffers. A fast, mobile-first website is a local SEO advantage.
